DWGA Fall Meeting, Golf & Dinner

The Fall Meeting was held November 18th at Cavaliers CC. This year's format was much different than meetings held in the past. We played a fun round of golf, for 21 women; 50 women attended the meeting, at which an excellent dinner was served. We posted DWGA Fun Facts around the room, and held a Chinese Auction to benefit the DSGA Scholarship Fund. We would like to congratulate the 21 BRAVE women who endured the elements and played golf, nearly all of them made it through 18 holes!

During the business meeting each Board Member and Committee Chair presented their reports. Ann Hitchens, DWGA Treasurer, explained our financial position and reported the organization is in good financial health. Cynthia Hunsberger, Tournament Chair, reported a slight increase in tournament participation, and nearly all events were filled. Sally Grillo, Director of Course Rating, informed us that the Rating Team rated 8 courses, and 16 sets of tees!

An awards ceremony was held for our Senior Champion, Diane Herndon; our Team Matches Champions, Gross - Chesapeake Bay NE, and Net - Pike Creek GC; and our Hole-in-One Club, which included 5 women, Dottie Farmer, Joyce Olliffe, Eleanor Warren, Virginia Steele, and Mary Monagle.

We held a Chinese Auction to raise money for the DSGA Scholarship Fund. Seven baskets with assorted items were raffled; each basket contained a foursome to a golf course in the State. We raised $830!! We also donate $1 from each tournament entry for the Fund. Our total this year is $1,664! Thank you Ladies! The Scholarship Fund program has 24 students now attending different schools throughout the country, at an annual cost of over $50,000.

DWGA Team Matches

The DWGA Team Matches is typically a 6-week event where different clubs compete in matches against each other for a Gross and Net Champion; teams consist of two, two-person teams each week. However, this year there is a Northern and Southern division, and the Northern division has 7 teams competing! The Northern Division teams are from Cavaliers CC, Delcastle GC, Three Little Bakers CC, Newark CC, Chesapeake Bay North East, Chesapeake Bay Rising Sun, and Delaware National CC. The Southern Division is made up of three teams from Bear Trap Dunes GC, Kings Creek CC, and Maple Dale CC. There will be a championship between the Northern and Southern Gross and Net winners on October 25th, to determine the winners.

Women's Amateur Championship

The 2008 Women’s Amateur Championship was held at Newark Country Club, June 23rd-25th. It was a beautiful but grueling three days at Newark with some pretty remarkable play. Andrea Daly from Fieldstone GC was able to hold off two former champions to earn her first Amateur title. Daly shot three consecutive rounds in the 70s (75-76-75) for a total of 226. Katy Heskett, of Delcastle GC and the 2007 Women’s Amateur Champion finished second with scores of 81-76-74 and a total of 231. Three-time champion, Meghan Adams of Cavaliers CC was the first round leader, with a 74, and finished third over-all with a total of 237. In the final round, Dottie Farmer of Cavaliers CC had a hole-in-one on the 108 yard par 3, second hole hitting a 7-iron. That is Dottie’s 11th recorded hole-in-one, and this is the second consecutive year that a hole-in-one has been made in the final round of the Women’s Amateur. Last year Andrea Daly had one at Bayside Resort on the 127 yard, 3rd hole with a 7-iron.

The Delaware Women’s Golf Association would like to thank Newark Country Club and its’ members for hosting this prestigious event for three consecutive days. We would also like to thank Doug Frazier, Head Professional, and his staff for their excellent service and assistance with this event. Kevin Mayhew, Superintendent, and his staff for the excellent course conditions, and the difficult but fair course set up. Elizabeth George, Banquet Manager, and her staff for their service throughout the event. We would like to thank all the Newark CC volunteers, and the DSGA volunteers; without their help the tournament would not have been so successful.

3-2-1

The 3-2-1 tournament has been rescheduled for Wednesday, August 20th at Wild Quail Golf & CC. The original tournament date was hampered by torrential and unrelenting rain. The scheduled shotgun ended up going out, and the ladies survived all of five holes as the rain continued to come down. Lunch will not be served on the rescheduled date but the club will be offering a special for those who would like to stay after the round. We will be able to take additional teams, if anyone is interest please contact Jennifer O’Brien in the office at 302-234-3365. If you need to make changes to your team please let Jennifer know by Monday, August 11th.
